Chennai: Train and bus fares skyrocketing before the Pongal weekend is passe. With almost all flights out of Chennai booked over the next three days, airfares for the last few seats available have risen considerably — so much so that a ticket to Delhi on Monday morning’s Jet Airways flight (9W 836) will cost you a whopping Rs 39,210.
“Low-cost carriers like Spicejet and Indigo showed they had a few tickets to Delhi but even those were priced at `11,500 and agents told us to contact the airport office as there were very few seats left,” said Avinash Jain, a techie who got his leave sanctioned only on Saturday morning. Given how normal airfares to Delhi cost around `7,800 when booked in advance, last minute ticket-seekers were left rudely shocked on Sunday.
Travel agents confirmed the same and added that maximum requests from frantic passengers were for flights to Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai. “
