Flight schedules crash as fog cripples airport

New Delhi: Dense fog over Sunday and a large part of Monday affected nearly half of the flights at IGI Airport on these two days. While the airport confirmed 652 flights had been delayed, cancelled or diverted till 11.15am on Monday, sources said the spillover of the delays continued into Monday afternoon, and the total number of flights affected could cross 800.
As unrelenting fog caused runways to shut repeatedly, people spent hours at the various terminals. Airports to which the Delhi-bound flights were diverted had to stretch their resources thin to accommodate and make sleeping arrangements for the stranded passengers.
Between 1am on Sunday and 11.15am on Monday, visibility at the airport remained in the 50-100 metres range, peaking once at 700metres. IGI's two airports were mostly shut from 9pm on Sunday to 4am on Monday. While no operations were reported from runway 11/29, some flights landed on runway 10/28 using CAT III B (for low visibility) equipment. Officials said the fog was too dense for even the best technology available with them. The airport operator blamed 'technical reasons' for most of the delays.
