Thiruvananthapuram: Very few airlines have adequately trained ILS-compliant pilots. Training brings to bear huge expenses to the company, a senior commander and a compliant pilot said.
Spending Rs 12-15 lakh on training each pilot for operating flights for only 10-15 days in a year does not make economic sense to airlines. Not just do aircraft need to be equipped for CAT-III operations, but the Captain and the First Officer also need to be certified. Several aircraft are not CAT-III compliant.
The ground systems needed are expensive and as also their maintenance, a commander said.
At least 25-30 per cent of the pilot pool manning airlines in India should ideally be CAT-III compliant to ensure smooth operations.
