Karnataka first Coast Guard aviation unit still ground

Bangalore: A move that was expected to provide the coasts of Karnataka a major security revamp is stuck in bureaucratic processes, preventing the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) from raising an aviation unit in Mangalore.
According to ICG sources, the force has been readying to raise its aviation unit, the Coast Guard Aviation Enclave, for over a year now. But delay in land clearance has kept the plans at bay.
"We were to raise the unit, the first in Karnataka, utilizing the old terminal of Mangalore airport. However, delay in clearing the same by the government has hampered the process," a senior official told TOI.
The ICG, which shares the responsibility of guarding the coasts along with the coastal police, strongly believes that the aviation unit will enhance its patrolling capabilities.
