T2 Mumbai: Bigger and better

New Delhi: Three-and-a-half years after the national Capital got its new terminal, the country’s commercial capital finally has a swanky airport. If it was T3 in Delhi, it is T2 in Mumbai.
With a capacity to handle over 40 million passengers annually, T2 should propel Mumbai among the top airports in the world in terms of passenger-handling capacity.
T2 is expected to start commercial operations in February.
Delhi’s T3 can handle only 34 million passengers a year although it is spread over 5.4 million sq ft. In comparison, Mumbai’s new terminal is spread over only 4.7 million sq ft.
Both T3 and T2 have courted controversies. The Comptroller and Auditor General raised objections, stating that the Civil Aviation Ministry had violated bid conditions to favour the GMR-led DIAL in the case of Delhi’s T3.
T2 had its share of problems such as the resettlement of people residing in and around the airport.
However, airlines are not too happy about the prospect of shifting operations to the new terminal. They had invested heavily in having their own lounges for premium-class passengers in the existing terminal.
