Chennai: The city airport, which has been troubled by ceiling crashes and leakages at the new terminals, is facing a new problem: unstable aerobridges. Insiders say poor maintenance has left the aerobridges in a bad shape. Passengers had a narrow escape when the axle of an aerobridge at Bay 32 of the international terminal collapsed three weeks ago, minutes before offloading passengers from a Cathay Pacific flight in the wee hours. A report following the incident sent to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) by the officer in charge of ground operations said, "My staff had a narrow escape. This would have been a disaster if it had happened while passengers were disembarking." At the time of the incident, staff were positioned on the aerobridge to meet the flight. It collapsed while moving towards the aircraft.
