8 held at airport for smuggling in gold worth Rs 2.04cr

Mangalore: An endoscopy conducted into the bowels of the gold smuggler from Dubai yielded 29 gold pellets weighing 428g. The gold valued at anything between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 14 lakh was thoroughly cleaned and handed over to customs officials.
But one pellet stuck near the small intestine couldn't be removed. The smuggler, identified as 44-year-old Shashidharan, had swallowed the gold pellets to avoid detection by airport scanners.
The KMC doctors who first tried to extract the pellets using colonoscopy didn't succeed and they opted for the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Doctors said the remaining pellet was moving and it may come out soon.
Customs officials said Shashidharan may not be arrested as the value of the gold recovered was less than Rs 20 lakh.
