After Phones, Smugglers Go for 'Hardware' to Ferry Gold

Chennai: A week after customs and DRI sleuths put the spotlight on mobile phones after they found smugglers using them effectively to sneak gold into the country, officers caught a man who had concealed gold inside an amateur hand drilling machine. According to airport sources, K Rajasekar (28) from Devanapalli had arrived in Chennai from Singapore on an Air India Express (IX 681) on Thursday.
Acting on a hunch, officials took him aside and checked his baggage. “When they looked inside they found that he had a home drilling kit with a few drill bits inside. On opening the drill components, the sleuths found that 800 gm of gold rolled in carbon paper was inside,” said a source.
