Chandigarh: The city airport would soon get an advanced navigation aid that would facilitate landing of aircraft in lower visibility conditions, a facility that would bring huge relief for passengers forced to endure flight cancellations during foggy conditions in the winter.
Indian Air Force (IAF) that controls the airport would replace the Airport Authority of India's (AAI) Instrument landing System (ILS) Cat-I with advanced ILS Cat-II. The approach lighting system along the runway would also be upgraded and made compatible with the newly installed ILS. Experts said on installation of CAT-II and upgraded approach lighting system, aircraft would be able to land at visibility of around 600 metres.
