DRI seizes gold worth Rs 1.25 crore at Karipur

Kozhikode: Officials with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 4 kg of gold worth Rs 1.25 crore from two passengers who arrived at the Karipur International Airport from Dubai on Monday morning.
The arrested are Kannur residents Siraj Parambath (29) hailing from Kottayam Poyil and Mohammed Alsaf (29) who is a native of Koothuparamba. They tried to sneak in four gold biscuits, weighing 1 kg each, concealed in their socks.
The passengers landed on Air India Express flight IX- 344 around 2am. Officials nabbed them based on a tip-off. A top DRI official said they suspect the role of a Kasaragod-based hawala racket behind the smuggling operation, adding that they are being questioned for further details. The arrested will be produced before the economic offences court in Kochi on Tuesday.
The customs preventive unit in Kozhikode had, on Thursday, seized 2.8 kg gold with a market value of Rs 83.48 lakh and arrested three persons, including an Air India security official, as they attempted to smuggle gold on Thursday.
