Farmers oppose land acquisition for Kolhapur airport project

Kolhapur: Farmers from Bormani village near Solapur have opposed the proposed acquisition of 28 hectares of land for the greenfield airport project over land purchase price.
On Saturday, the farmers held a meeting with the district administration, in which collector Pravin Gedam was also present. While the farmers were demanding around Rs 90 lakh per acre as compensation, Gedam and representatives of the state revenue department officials remained non-committal over quoting the compensation amount. The total cost of the project is Rs 250 crore.
"The final decision on land acquisition and compensation amount will be taken by state revenue officials. We will communicate the farmers' stand to the state revenue department," Gedam said.
The farmers were told that the compensation amount will be "good and satisfactory". However, objecting to the administration's ambiguous stand, the farmers said they would not sign the papers for land acquisition. They also demanded the state government to move a proposal of "price on paper" for further discussion.
