New tech to help chopper pilots weather the storm

Mumbai: Monday brings a landmark milestone for the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). It will install a new technological system that will provide weather warnings to helicopter pilots. The first such system in the country will become operational at the busy
Juhu airport and the second is currently being installed for the benefit of pilgrims in Vaishnodevi.
Helicopter crashes in India have claimed lives of VIPs, defence personnel and politicians like Andhra chief minister YSR Reddy, Arunachal CM Dorjee Khandu, Lok Sabha speaker GMC Balayogi, industrialist O P Jindal and Surender Singh, the son of Haryana politician Bansi Lal. Several airports and helipads in India operate without weather warning systems, resulting in fatal accidents like these. Last year, a helicopter crashed into a hill in Thane, killing all the five occupants.
K S Hosalikar, deputy director of IMD Mumbai, said accidents like these prompted the programme.
