Skydiving: High on thrills, low on regulation

Bangalore: The high-risk, high-thrills sport of skydiving can be carried out with only a few simple permissions in India.
An organisation conducting the activity needs permission from the Air Traffic Control and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to fly the aircrafts from which participants jump, permission from the local police or district administration, as well as an okay from the owner of the property where the activity is being conducted, industry insiders said.
Currently, no government agency is involved in certification, accreditation, licensing or regulation of personnel involved or organisations conducting the activity.
“The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, which also includes adventure sports and presents National Adventure Awards annually, has done nothing. Sometime back, the Delhi-based Aero Club of India linked up with the Ministry to come out with some regulations, but [the plan fell through] as decision making was slow. Now, the club is aligned more with the Ministry of Civil Aviation,” a source aware of the development, said. This lack of regulation, many believe, is because skydiving is an expensive, and hence niche, activity.
