Salem: Preliminary investigations by police revealed that negligence was the reason for the death of a 26-year-old woman who was practising skydiving in Salem on Thursday.
V Ramya, who hailed from Bangalore, died when her parachute malfunctioned after she dived from an aircraft, from a height of 10,000 feet, over Salem airport. Ramya's husband Vinod (28) was on the ground when she fell to her death. The couple were members of Bangalore-based Indian Skydiving and Parachute Association (ISPA).
Salem district superintendent of police R Sakthivel told TOI that there was no proper emergency medical facility at the training site. "There was no ambulance at the spot. Once she fell on the ground from 10, 000 feet, the villagers and others informed Salem airport to send an ambulance, following which the vehicle reached the place nearly after 20 minutes. Ramya was lying on the ground until the ambulance reached the spot. We could have saved her life if the sport organizers placed an ambulance at the training spot," he said.
