Smuggler hides gold on Doha flight, aide takes it out in Hyderabad

Mumbai:  Gold smugglers keep innovating to hoodwink customs officials manning airports. In a recent instance, Air India's practice of operating international flights into India, which continue their onward journey on a domestic route was exploited by three smugglers. They brought in 7.5kg of gold worth Rs 2.3 crore from Doha to Hyderabad on Tuesday. The gold was then transported to Mumbai by rail, only to be caught by the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) officials.
One of the smugglers, Jamil Mewawala, boarded the Doha-Mumbai-Hyderabad flight carrying gold cut into 30 pieces. The pieces were then neatly wrapped and kept under the smuggler's seat. He got off at Mumbai and his associate, one Ramsingh, boarded the flight. "He had asked for the same seat," an official said. They are carriers and informed about the task only on a need-to-know basis by the smuggling syndicate.
