Taxiway closure, runway work hit flight movement at airport

Chennai: The woes of passengers landing at Chennai airport worsened on Saturday when a two-hour-long scheduled runway closure for maintenance work affected flight movements already hit by closure of a taxiway. For the past four days, passengers have been forced to wait for up to 30 minutes in planes after landing, a large part of the total flying time from airports in the south, because of congestion due to the taxiway closure.
Flights are rescheduled for routine maintenance of the main runway between 2.30pm and 4.30pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays, but a flurry of landings and take-offs soon after the runway is opened causes congestion because planes have to take a roundabout route to taxi due to the closure of the taxiway. "A Bangalore-Chennai flight was not allowed to take off from Bangalore for a few minutes because of ground congestion at Chennai airport.
