Airline, airport were clueless about Indians on board missing flight

Chennai: Hours after Malaysia Airlines Kuala Lumpur-Beijing MH370 flight went missing over South China on Saturday, airline officials, airport officials and immigration staff here remained clueless about Indian passengers on board the aircraft.
Five Indians were on board the flight including Chandrika Sharma from Chennai who had checked in to Beijing via Kuala Lumpur when she boarded a Chennai-Kuala Lumpur flight on Friday morning. But Malaysian authorities have been maintaining till afternoon that no Indian was on the plane.
Malaysian transport minister Hishamuddin Hussein held a press conference in Kuala Lumpur and said that the "passenger manifest shows that there are no Indians on board" which created confusion among relatives. Malaysia Airlines confirmed to the family that she was on the flight in the afternoon. Later the airline issued a statement saying that passenger manifest could be released only after all families are informed.
A senior airport official said that there was no foolproof system in place to get details about transit passengers.
