Aranmula: Land Board Drags Feet on Excess Land Issue

Thiruvananthapuram: The delay of Kozhenchery Taluk Land Board (TLB) in issuing a revised order as directed by the High Court in the excess land issue pertaining to the KGS Group, the promoters of the proposed Aranmula airport project, has given rise to concerns that it would help the government in giving exemption to the business group.
The High Court through an order issued on  November 27, 2013 quashed the TLB order declaring a total of 232 acres of land purchased by the KGS Group as excess land and directed the board to reconsider and take a fresh decision within six months.
With the declaration of the Lok Sabha elections, the TLB will have only just 11 days left to take a decision before the deadline set by the HC ends on May 27, as the model code of conduct will remain in effect till May 16.
The TLB had enough time to issue the new order before the election was declared. It is alleged that the TLB had purposefully delayed the hearing of Abraham Kalamannil, the original owner of the land, as directed by the HC before pronouncing the new order.
They also had time to hear those who are opposing the Aranmula project. The TLB has wasted time only for the government to give exemption to more than 200 acres of land that the airport promoters - KGS Group - had acquired as part of the project, highly placed sources said.
