Gold worth Rs 68 lakh seized from passenger at Coimbatore airport

Coimbatore:  Customs officials at the Coimbatore airport intercepted a 24-year-old passenger of an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah, and seized two gold bars and two gold plates weighing 2.23 kilograms worth Rs68.11lakh from the passenger, who was attempting to smuggle the gold to Kerala from Sharjah, early Sunday morning.
The passenger has been identified as A Shavaz of Kasargode hailing from Kerala state. He was working as a salesman at a textile shop in Sharjah. He was a passenger of an Air Arabia flight which reached Coimbatore at 3.30pm on Sunday. He was isolated and frisked on the basis of suspicion and later was taken into custody.
He had hidden two gold bars weighing one kg each and two gold plates weighing 116 gm in his underclothes. The total worth of the gold seized is estimated to be Rs 68.11 lakh.
