In Kolkata, freak fog at runway disrupts flights

Kolkata:  Flight operations at Kolkata airport were affected on Monday morning by fog, an unusual phenomenon at this time of the year. A Jet Airways aircraft arriving from Mumbai had to be diverted to Dhaka as visibility dropped drastically while several departing flights were held up. Only pilots trained to fly in low visibility were allowed to take off.
Fliers were taken by surprise as flight departures were halted on Monday morning. According to airlines, there was no indication of fog that suddenly enveloped the runway, parking bays and apron area. While visibility was crystal clear at 1,800m around 4.50am, it dropped to 500m by 5.20am and further to 200m by 5.50am, stalling morning takeoffs.
"Even at the time of driving into the airport, I had no clue about the fog forming near the runway.
I cannot recall when operations at the airport was disrupted due to fog in late March," said an airlin5e official.
