Nedumbassery: In yet another instance of blatant attempt at gold smuggling in the Dubai-Kochi air corridor, the Air Intelligence Unit of Air Customs at Cochin International Airport (CIAL) on Saturday confiscated 650 grams of gold in the form of crepe ribbon and two gold biscuits (of 232 grams), from two passengers who arrived from Sharjah.
Aneef Posot, 41, of Manjeshwar, Kasargod, who had arrived from Sharjah by Jet Airways flight 9W561 at 5.15 am on Saturday, was caught for carrying 650 grams of gold converted into a 10-metre-long, 1-inch-wide ribbon. The ribbon had been cut into pieces and pasted onto layers of cardboard in two-three layers and hidden in the cardboard base of the airbag carried by him.
The same type of cardboard pieces had also been concealed in the carton he had stuffed with other fancy articles. The passenger used 11 lingerie packs to hide the remaining pieces of ribbon.
