Gold smuggler intercepted at Thiruvananthapuram airport

Thiruvananthapuram: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted Chennai native Kaffeel Adarasan (32), who arrived at Trivandrum International Airport from Maldives via Singapore, while he was trying to smuggle 1kg gold into the country.
The DRI received a tip-off pertaining to the passenger, who is said to have taken longer to disembark from the aircraft as he was busy trying to dislodge the gold that was stuck to his seat.
"1kg gold was taped to his seat with a black adhesive. While People of Indian Origin (PIO) are allowed to bring up to 1kg gold into the country by declaring it and paying 10% duty, this passenger is not entitled to bring gold as he is a tourist who exited the country for three days. Only PIOs with minimum six months stay abroad are entitled to this. The passenger has accepted his mistake," said a DRI official. Alternatively, PIO (male) are allowed to bring in duty-free gold worth Rs 50,000 into India. For women the limit is Rs 1 lakh. Carrying gold over and above this limit is subject to duty. Passengers must declare the gold on arrival and pay duty, around 4% of notified value in case of gold bars bearing serial number, weight and manufacturer's name and 10% in case of any other kind of gold, including jewellery.
