Man with gold bars worth Rs 17.8 lakh held at Trichy airport

Trichy: A 50-year-old man was caught by the immigration authorities at the Trichy Airport on Tuesday night for allegedly trying to smuggle 600 g of gold worth Rs 17.8 lakh.
The accused, Sapthar Ali, 50, from Chennai had reached Trichy Airport from Sri Lanka on Tuesday night in a Sri Lankan airlines flight and was caught during the screening by the immigration authorities.
The metal detectors started buzzing when the passenger passed the security check, which made the authorities check him completely. The check revealed that he carried four gold bars in his underpants.
According to the airport police authorities, the passenger is currently being inquired about the reason behind boarding the flight to Trichy. They believe that Ali would have used the flight thinking he could pass the security check easily.
