Mumbai Airport struggles as cargo piles up

Mumbai: There has been a sudden pile-up of export cargo at the Mumbai airport, which is receiving a large amount of freight diverted from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port over the past few days, and the airport authority appears unable to handle the situation.
Cargo operators exasperated by the delay, estimated the value of the cargo that is held up at between Rs300 crore and Rs400 crore. The cargo includes pharma, textiles and engineering consignments to the US, Europe and the Far East.
The matter reached a head on Saturday when a section of custom clearing agents and workers stopped operations for about five hours, in protest against the Mumbai International Airport Limited's (MIAL) inability to clear the backlog despite an assurance to this effect a day before.
MIAL has attributed this situation to the financial year-end rush and excess advance bookings accepted by airlines.
