Officials seize gold bars worth Rs 12 lakh from Air Arabia passenger

Coimbatore: Customs officials have seized six gold bars, each weighing 100g, from a 39-year-old passenger at Coimbatore airport early Sunday morning. He had travelled to Sharjah from Trichy airport three days ago and flew in from Sharjah to Coimbatore with the gold bars. He had hidden the gold bars in his rectum and officials had to take him to the hospital where he was given enema to retrieve the bars.
The passenger has been identified as A Rukman Ameedu (39) from Trichy. He travelled often and has been involved in gold smuggling for some time. The officials said that Rukman travelled to Sharjah from Trichy on April 4. He got the gold from someone in Sharjah and attempted to smuggle it to Coimbatore through an Air Arabia flight.
At 3.30am on Sunday, his flight arrived at Coimbatore airport and customs officials questioned him but he gave contradictory replies. Consequently, Rukman was taken into custody where he confessed that he had hidden gold bars worth Rs 12 lakh in his rectum.
