Airport station to bear brunt of Metro ban on heavy bags

Mumbai: Passengers with heavy luggage will not be allowed to travel by the Mumbai Metro, which is set to become operational within a fortnight. While the trains will have several hi-tech features, restrictions will be imposed on passengers carrying luggage beyond certain specifications.
Given that the 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro line has a station at the airport, the restriction will mean that most air passengers with luggage will be barred from travelling.
"We do not want the Metro to become carriages of all kinds of odd cargo items. Hence we have limited the size and specification of luggage allowed on the trains. Bags/suitcases should not measure more than 2 ft x 1.5 ft. These specifications are large enough for an average traveller," said a senior official who requested anonymity.
"It's not an unusual restriction," the official continued. "The Delhi Metro, for instance, also has restrictions on size and number of bags a passenger is allowed." In Delhi, however, the airport express line has a proper baggage handling system that ferries luggage along with passengers.
