Pune: Thousands of passengers walk in and out of Pune International Airport every day, but God help them should they have a medical emergency. With medical facilities non-existent at the airport, which handles over 10,000 passengers of over 60 flights daily, this issue has assumed a new importance all over again following the sudden death of a 29-year-old airport newspaper vendor, who convulsed and fell silent at the airport premises on Thursday morning.
He was rushed to the Sassoon General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He died of cardiac arrest, police said. The deceased person has been identified as Laxman Pirappa Natekar, a resident of Lohegaon.
This is the second incident this year. Meanwhile, distraught over the death of Natekar, his family said, and the Airport police also agree, that his life could have been saved, if he had been able to get medical attention on time. After the tragic incident, Airport police have take up the issue with authorities highlighting the imperative need to set the ball rolling by setting up an emergency medical facility at the airport without delay.
