New Delhi: A union representing a section of Air India’s cabin crew has now dashed off an angry letter to aviation regulator DGCA, alleging that a new standard operating procedure (SOP) and inadequate number of cabin crew on flights has left the Air India cabin crew unable to carry out their functions properly on board the aircraft.Air India sources have, however, dismissed the allegations levelled by the union, called the All-India Cabin Crew Association (AICCA). Air India sources said that adequate number of cabin crew as per rules are positioned on every flight.
But in a letter dripping with sarcasm, the AICCA has told the DGCA that training of cabin crew as “trapeze” artistes is now required and has also described flights as “flying coffins”, arguing that inadequate number of cabin crew on flights is endangering flight safety.“The basic principle followed is to open the door in any emergency, one crew member is to observe the outside conditions and the second is to open the door while the first crew-member is guiding the passengers but now with the new SOP, the single crew member at one door, after opening it, will have to leave the passengers to fend for themselves and have to jump over passengers who have made a beeline to the said door for evacuation and then open the other door.
