Surat: Surat airport officials and staff members may have to work overtime to cater to the flights, which could be diverted from Mumbai's Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport to the city in the night hours should bad weather conditions prevail in the megapolis.
With the start of the monsoon season, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to lessen the burden on Mumbai and Ahmedabad airports on diversion of airplanes. The AAI wants Surat airport authorities to contact Mumbai airport air traffic control (ATC) for daily weather condition and to know about any possible diversion of airplanes due to bad weather, before closing the airport operations every night till the end of the monsoon season.
"Small airports like Surat, Vadodara and Aurangabad would be utilized to divert flights from Mumbai, especially during nights when the airports are shut. The main aim is to decongest Ahmedabad airport, where the flights from Mumbai are invariably diverted during bad weather conditions in the megapolis," said AAI sources. Surat airport is equipped with night landing facilities and is in close proximity to Mumbai.
