Nine fliers yet to discharge 'smuggled' gold from belly

Trichy: Gold smugglers are getting smarter and ingenious in their bid to smuggle in gold. Couriers melt gold to conceal it inside baggage handles or wheels. A popular method which has come to light at Trichy airport frequently is concealing the metal in one's rectum. Some even consume gold as was the case with nine passengers who were caught by the customs officials at the Trichy airport on Monday night. Officials administered 'banana treatment' to recover 2.70 kg of gold they had consumed.
The nine-member group arrived from Malaysia in a flight of Malindo Air. Airport intelligence staff grew suspicious after one passenger in the group became nervous. He was picked up for interrogation which revealed the group's attempt to smuggle gold. All of them had consumed gold pieces weighing totally 2.70 kg. The value of the gold in their bellies is estimated to be about Rs 70 lakh.
The passengers are Mohammed Riyal (25), Kalanthiri (21), Ubaisulkarunai (30), Sheik Abdullah (23), Aamir Muhammed (26), Akbar Sali ( 31), Rafique Muhammed (25), MuhhammedRafique (36) and R Rafique (39). They are undergoing treatment at the government hospital where they were made to eat bananas which act as laxative. However, the effort to initiate bowel movement didn't yield the desired result. Doctors said even consumption of dozens of bananas failed to work on them. We are trying to administer other medicines, they said, while adding that such cases have never been brought to the hospital.
