Kochi: When Baiju Varghese, a head constable with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) received a transfer order to Imphal in Manipur, he hardly needed to think twice. He soon submitted an application for voluntary retirement. The reason? Baiju was inseparably close to Charlie, the sniffer dog he trains at the CISF unit at Cochin International Airport (Cial) unit here.
Though CISF authorities turned down his plea, the Kerala high court on Tuesday issued a stay on his transfer order, temporarily sparing Baiju from an agonizing separation. Charlie is the lead CISF sniffer dog at the airport.
Baiju has been Charlie's handler since March 2007. His representation to CISF's Cial unit commandant went thus: "I am totally dedicated to the upkeep of the dog and always keep the dog active for performing sniffing duties. I forget my personal comforts for the upkeep of my dog and never availed any leave since 2007. I am totally emotionally attached to the dog and departing (with) the dog is agonizing me."
