Bangalore: Two months after he was served a summons from the special court for economic offences in Bangalore, Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya again sought an exemption from personally appearing before the court, on Thursday, on the grounds that he was in San Francisco to participate in his daughter's high school graduation ceremony. The court granted Mallya the exemption and has adjourned the case.
Mallya was told to appear before the court in connection with three criminal cases filed by the Income Tax (I-T) department against the airline and himself for not remitting tax deducted at source (TDS). The cases pertain to three financial years beginning 2009-10 and the department is claiming a TDS due of around R400 crore from the airline, disputing the quantum of the tax demand.
On Thursday, Mallya's counsel moved the plea for exemption saying he will be attending the graduation of his daughter Tanya at the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco on June 6. At the previous hearing on April 3, Mallya had sought time to appear before the court as he was travelling at the time.
