Chennai: A minor fire broke out in the basement baggage-handling area of the new domestic terminal at Chennai airport on Tuesday afternoon after the UPS battery back-up system burst. Nobody was injured in the accident that occurred around 2pm. All the 88 batteries in the system used as back-up power supply to IT services exploded.
Sources said the sprinkler system was triggered but the fire team had to be called in after it reignited. "The batteries were exploding one after another till around 4pm though power supply was cut," said an official. An extractor was used to remove smoke as there are few outlets in the basement.
"The fire did not affect operations as there are no flights between 2.30pm and 4.30pm due to runway closure on Tuesdays and Saturdays," said an airport official. An alternative power backup was provided to operate check-in and other IT-enabled services when operations began before 4pm.
