Mumbai: As the state assembly polls draws nearer, politics over statues of eminent personalities has began in the city. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has demanded that the statue of Shivaji should be installed at the gate of Terminal 2 of Mumbai International Airport.
MNS corporator Sudhir Jadhav said, “Though the airport has been named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, it still does not have his statue. Hence the grand statue of the Maratha king seated on his throne facing the airport should be set up at the entrance to the airport.”
Chhatrapati Shivaji has an iconic status in Maharashtra and his statue at the airport would inspire all passengers including foreigners, Mr Jadhav added.The building of Chhatrapati Shivaji's statue at the airport has political connotations, as Shiv Sena and the MNS have been demanding his statue at the airport. The original statue has been shifted from the airport to a nearby garden three years ago. Plans are now afoot by the Mumbai International Airport Authority (MIAL) to construct a museum, based on the life of Maratha king, at the airport.
