Ahmedabad: Air intelligence unit of the customs department on Sunday morning held two men for trying to smuggle in gold worth Rs 60 lakh at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The Mumbai-based duo (both 25) was caught with 2 kg of gold bars concealed in their private parts and shoes.
This is the third such detection at the city airport where domestic passengers have been held. Until now, all the smugglers who were caught had arrived from outside India. According to sources, both accused belong to Ullasnagar in Mumbai and are first-time carriers. This is the second gold smuggling case in this month and thirty eighth incident since January.
The men had arrived from Air India flight AI-130 from Mumbai at 6.45 am. Since it was an international flight coming from London via Mumbai, it landed on international terminal.
