4kg gold seized from cookers at Chennai airport

Chennai:  Customs officials on Sunday seized 4kg of gold worth 1.5 crore seized from Chennai airport. A senior customs official said almost 2.6kg gold bars were hidden in induction cookers brought by four passengers who came from Singapore. Another 1.4kg was seized from an unclaimed baggage from the conveyor belt.
The officer said gold bars from four passengers, residents of Triplicane and Sembakkam in the city, were seized on Sunday morning. "We have seized 14 gold bars. We are investigating the supposed destination of the gold," he said.
A source said there were reports that a group of people who were waiting to receive the carriers made an attempt to release the smugglers after they were taken into custody by customs sleuths. However, a senior customs officer refused to confirm any such incident.
