ATC worker held for colleague's death

Kolkata: A youth employed at the Air Traffic Control (ATC) has been arrested over the death of his colleague. Police have charged Pallav Swarnakar with culpable homicide.

The victim, Soumya Majumdar, was found unconscious on a road near the airport early on May 16. He died in hospital soon after. Police called it an "accidental death".

Swarnakar, who is from Madhya Pradesh, joined ATC two years ago. He lived near Airport Gate No.8 in a rented flat. Majumdar of Kalyani had joined one and a half years ago. He lived in a rented flat on VIP road.

According to police, Swarnakar said: "We went to Chinar Park restaurant, where we had drinks and dinner. Then we were returning home on a bike." Swarnakar was driving the bike. "I lost balance at a point and fell. Then I lost consciousness. I came to my senses only around 4.30am. I didn't see Majumdar anywhere, so I rode the bike home," he reportedly told police.

However, early on May 16, police got information that a youth was lying motionless on the road near the airport approach bridge. It was Majumdar. He was taken to hospital, where he died.
