Gold Mules First to Abandon Ship

Chennai: Freedom over fortune. At least that’s what couriers who smuggle gold into the country are doing in the face of heightened checking at the city airport.

On Monday morning, Abdul Mubeen who had been tasked with ferrying a princely 4.2 kg of gold ingots from Dubai, was spooked by the delay in letting passengers get off the flight after Indigo flight 6E 66 landed here.

“He immediately took the gold and kept it under seat 22F and tried to act normal. This flight is not one that connects to a domestic destination, so there could not have been any plan to have it picked up by an accomplice,” said a police official. Sadly for him, his escape bid stood foiled even before it began — a team from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence entered the flight and combed it till they found him and his stashed gold.

Barely a day earlier, four men had been caught carrying gold hidden in induction stoves. But just as Customs sleuths were patting themselves on the back for not being fooled, CISF guards directed them to a lone suitcase on Conveyor Belt 1, which remained unclaimed.
