Techies of Bangalore will soon have another avenue of employment: jobs in the aerospace and aviation sector. An aerospace park, coming up just behind the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), promises to employ over 10,000 people directly, and another 10,000 indirectly in the next few years.
Karnataka, which is engaged in a race against time with Telangana over competing facilities, has already acquired 900-plus acres at Singahalli village behind KIA in a bid to leave its stamp on the country's multibillion dollar aerospace market. The acquisition is nearly four times the 250 acres earmarked for a similar park at Hyderabad, powered by the GMR Group.
As per aviation industry estimates, India is on the verge of signing big defence deals for aircraft and an estimated Rs 5 lakh crore is to be spent on the aerospace and defence sectors in the next 10 years. Aiming to grab a chunk of this spend — under the mandatory local sourcing in all big aviation deals — Karnataka released an ambitious Aerospace Policy in 2013, seeking investment of Rs 60,000 crore over 10 years and employment for one lakh people. The park near KIA is the first step towards this goal.
The facility, known as the KIADB Bengaluru Aerospace Park, has already seen Wipro and Swiss machine tools manufacturer Starrag set up base there. The big news, however, is that Rolls-Royce, the marquee British company which is the world's second largest aircraft engine manufacturer, is setting up a joint venture with Indian defence major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at the same venue. Another 40-plus companies have already been allotted land at the park.
