Trial flight at airport soon: Mahadik

Kolhapur: The Kolhapur airport is now just two clearances away from being thrown open for trial flights and regular operations — one from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the other from the civil aviation ministry — said member of parliament Dhananjay Mahadik.

"The airport has not been in use for a long time. Some repair works were to be done and clearances to be sought. The proposal to conduct trial flights is now with the DGCA. Once the DGCA gives its nod, the proposal will be moved to the civil aviation ministry for final approval," Mahadik said.

He added that both clearances were likely to be received before the Independence Day, August 15.

Restarting Kolhapur airport was one of Mahadik's promises during the election campaign.

Mahadik also said that not only would the airport be a landing and take-off station, but would also have fueling and night parking facilities. Both the facilities will bring additional revenue to the Kolhapur airport, making the way for further expansion to cater to larger planes such as the Boeing 777 or Airbus.
