Airport pampers non-VIP flyers with special privileges

Mumbai: Mumbai airport has become the first airport in India to offer non-VIP passengers with priority check-in and special lounge access with hassle-free security and immigration clearance. These travellers, designated Commercially Important Passengers, will not be required to pay an additional fee or issue instructions to airlines to be accorded special status. To begin with, first and business class flyers will qualify for the service said a MIAL spokesperson.

"We have set up 8 counters to check-in CIPs. They will be segregated from the rest of the passengers and will be issued their boarding passes at special created pods," A MIAL spokesperson said, adding that airlines will identify those passengers who they believe should qualify for the service.

"The CIP space will be Wi-Fi enabled, host facilities in the form of cultural theatres, luxury spas and private shower facilities."

According to an executive at a commercial carrier, while VIP lists are compiled by the public relations department and include any celebrities who may bring publicity and glamour to the airline, the CIP list is, as the name suggests, driven by bottom-lines. "The true elites are on this list, which is compiled by the sales department," said Reji Philip of Fort-based Cosmos Travels.

"These people bring hard cash. Typically they are top executives in large corporations who dictate travel policy or can create business opportunities and partnerships."
