Bangalore: Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operated Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), has been accorded the environmental clearance for its second stage expansion, including construction of a new terminal and a second runway.
"Along with the terminal and runway, we'll construct taxiways, aprons, aircraft parking and all aviation facilities and structures. The expansion is envisaged to accommodate the future traffic growth which is likely to reach 55 million passengers annually by 2029-2030 and approximately 1 million tonnes of cargo movement," BIAL said.
The expansion within the existing airport site area will cater to both aeronautical and non-aeronautical infrastructure facilities. BIAL senior director (finance and support service) B Bhaskar had told TOI in May this year that the construction of the second runway and terminal will begin by the end of this calendar year, and sources in BIAL say they are progressing in the same direction.
The second stage expansion approval was granted by the Ministry of Environment, Forests. BIAL managing director G V Sanjay Reddy said: "This now paves the way for us to secure final approvals for the project."
