Main accused in July gold smuggling case surrenders

Nagpur: The main accused in the gold smuggling case that came to fore at Nagpur airport in July surrendered before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JFMC) sixth court on Thursday. The Preventive unit of the Customs and Central Excise Commissionerate, Nagpur, has not revealed the person's name. But a release issued by them said the accused has also been granted bail.

Three other accused had been arrested earlier and granted bail. The names of all four have been withheld to prevent any obstruction in the investigation, said a senior official. Pradeep Bobde, the only accused whose name is known, is yet to be arrested. On July 4, Bobde was intercepted by the police near Khamla after a dramatic chase from the airport. He was caught with 1.13kg of gold worth Rs31.99 lakh. The crime branch later handed over the case to the airport customs. He had allegedly received the package of gold from a passenger aboard the Air Arabia flight from Sharjah.
