Three kg gold bars seized at city airport

Coimbatore: Three kg gold bars worth 90 lakh were seized from a 28-year-old passenger who arrived at Coimbatore airport from Sharjah on Friday. The passenger had hidden the bars, each weighing 1kg, in a suitcase. Officials said he had been told to hand them over to a person in Coimbatore and had been promised 30,000.

T K Shamshad, who worked in a textile shop in Kuthuparamba in Kannur district in Kerala, often travelled to Dubai where his younger brother is working.

On September 4, Shamshad had flown to Dubai from Delhi to visit his brother. He was returning via Coimbatore from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight on Friday. Around 4am, he was stopped by customs officials who found the bars in his suitcase cavities.
