MHA shoots down plan to shrink Juhu runway

Mumbai: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has stalled the airports authority's plan to allow construction of taller buildings around Juhu Aerodrome, dashing hopes of developers who were looking to profit from easing of rules.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had recently made a fresh proposal for reducing the length of the secondary runway at the airfield, which serves mainly helicopters and small aircraft, from 732 metres to 300 metres. The move would have enabled construction of high rises in the vicinity.

But when MHA learnt about the proposal, it warned AAI as well as the Civil Aviation Ministry against going ahead with it, citing security concerns.

The plan has now been put on the back burner, despite AAI officials' insistence that it poses no security threat and that it has not been drawn up to benefit builders.

AAI has been trying for several months to get rid of the secondary runway, numbered 16/34. It first suggested the idea in 2012, saying the runway was not being used.
