Mumbai: Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials of airport customs on Friday recovered four gold bars, worth over Rs1 crore, found hidden inside a bathroom at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA). The gold was probably concealed by a passenger with the intention of smuggling it out of the airport with the help of an intermediary.
The data available with the AIU has revealed a sharp rise in gold smuggling this year — 605kg till September. It was 70kg during the same period last year.
"It (gold smuggling) is unlikely to subside, what with the festive and marriage seasons round the corner," said additional commissioner (airport customs) Milind Lanjewar.
