Airport staffer among 2 held for smuggling

Pune:  The customs authorities arrested two persons, including a housekeeping attendant with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), at the city's Lohegaon airport for allegedly trying to smuggle over 2 kg foreign gold worth Rs 58.71 lakh.

The seized gold was brought in by Mohammad Mohsin Mobin Shaikh (24), a resident of Hamidiya building, Dongri in Mumbai, who travelled from Dubai to Pune on an Air India flight on Thursday afternoon.

On his arrival, Mohsin allegedly handed over a black-coloured pack, containing the gold, to housekeeping staffer Basheer Mohammad Shaikh (47) in the gents washroom located within the immigration area, in an attempt to clear the customs channel without declaring any dutiable items. However, an alert customs official noticed their suspicious activities and detained them for questioning.
