Cop crackdown on touts at airport curbs practice

Mumbai: This time, the police have finally woken up to the touting menace prevalent at Mumbai airport plaguing travellers and decided to levy a deposit of Rs5,000, apart from legal proceedings, if the offender is caught. This move seems to have hit the practise and brought down complaints.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) at Mumbai, considered to be among the busiest airports in Asia, has been infamous for the touts who blatantly cheat passengers, especially the foreigners. In the past, cases of physical harm perpetrated by these touts have also been registered with the police. These touts cheated passengers on various pretexts like charging 'trolley tax', 'airport entry tax', helping in getting accommodation, transport etc.

"It has been quite a relief from touting for the past few months." confirmed an airport official. Sources said that previously, over 120 to 150 cases of touting were recorded every week with the local police at the domestic and international terminal. The number of such complaints have gone down significantly after the new approach by the local police.
