Differences rise over Mopa airport in Cabinet meet

Panaji: Though the BJP-led government on Friday floated a global tender notice for ‘request for qualification’ (RFQ) for Mopa airport, differences in the State Cabinet on the issue became apparent on Wednesday as two Ministers from south Goa wanted the State government to first seek an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report prior to that.

The Ministers were Alina Saldanha, Minister for Environment and Forest from the BJP, and Avertano Furtado, Minister for Fisheries and Independent MLA from south Goa, where the movement led by Fr. Ermito Rebello under the banner of Goans For Dabolim Only (GFDO), is generating heat against the second-airport project.

Sources close to Ms. Saldanha on Monday told The Hindu that she had written to the government insisting that the government obtain written assurances from the Ministry of Defence and the Airport Authority of India that the existing Dabolim airport will continue as a civilian airport even after the Mopa airport becomes functional.
