Five arrested for smuggling gold

Mumbai: A wheelchair-bound six-month-pregnant woman carrying an infant was caught with gold bars worth Rs 27.56 lakh hidden inside the sanitary napkin she was wearing while another burqa-clad woman also carrying an infant was held with gold bars worth Rs 78.33 lakh at Mumbai airport on the intervening night between Friday and Saturday. The two were part of five separate gold seizures which led to a total recovery of Rs 3.55 crore, the second biggest in a single night.
Both women flew in from Dammam by Jet Airways flight number 9W563, according to officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs. Fazlatunissa Mohammed Saleem Abdul Rehman, a resident of Mira Road, had reached arrivals along with an infant when a personal check led to the recovery of 27 gold bars, each weighing 10 tola and collectively worth Rs 78.33 lakh from her jeans. Ms Fazlatunissa was followed by the six-month-pregnant and wheelchair-bound Tajwar Harim, who too was holding an infant. Nine gold bars, each weighing 10 tola, and one bar weighing 5 tola, together valued at Rs 27.56 lakh were recovered, with the yellow metal hidden inside the sanitary napkin Ms Tajwar was wearing. “Both said they were promised hefty monetary compensation for transporting the gold,” said an officer.
